![]() ![]() Back then, the notion was that reading local books (especially with dialogue in the vernacular) was uncool, baduy. My point is I don’t think I ever saw any books by Filipino authors in my childhood home. ![]() I think the entire family - and all the house guests - read all or parts of that book while on the toilet. One was addicted to Danielle Steel novels, and another kept a yellowed and torn-up copy of John Grisham’s The Firm in the bathroom for at least three years. Kids, Twins, High, University… hell, I was even hooked on those epic Magna Editions! (Remember Margo Black, the batshit-crazy murderer lady hell bent on being a Wakefield? Gaaaaawd I loved her and her drama.) My shelves were filled with the standard tween/teen fare, particularly those from the ( ghostwritten, apparently) Sweet Valley series. I don’t know if this is the case with most ’80s kids, but when I was growing up, I heavily leaned toward modern foreign-made/imported English books and stories, not homegrown lore. I wish I had been exposed to different book genres early in life, and read more material from local writers. ![]()

![]() ![]() I could feel the hate, the animosity between the two. You have to SELL the enemies part and then you have to win the reader over with the to-lovers part. The thing with this trope is that it’s tricky. I mean, I love captive prince, after all. ![]() There’s something about enemies-to-lovers that I absolutely love. I knew nothing about these soldiers and because the book is lacking any historical notes it is up to the reader to piece together a part of history that is, indeed, foreign to most Americans. ![]() Very little of the action is actually set in Poland but rather follows the characters on their long overland trip. ![]() This omission could be, on the surface, explained away because of the second highly unusual nature of the text, it is a WWII novel that deals with the partisan Polish Soldiers who run away through the Middle East to meet up with the British in what was then called Palestine. It is analogous to writing about the US Civil War with no mention of slavery. This lack of information, the sterilization of history, is deeply disturbing to me. Poland was the Nazi’s killing fields and while the characters mention they don’t want to fight for the Russians or the Germans they never give any reason why. First and most important to me is that the novel, which is set during WWII in the European theater with human protagonists who are Polish soldiers, makes no mention of the Holocaust. My responses to this text deal with three anomalies. ![]() ![]() ![]() From the beginning, Christianity was viewed as a tertium quid, something else entirely. #4 The irony of the modern culture wars is that Christianity is typically viewed as a religion and moralism, but in reality, it was not always so. The first child grows up, takes a conventional job, and settles down near Mom and Dad, while the second child goes off to live in the hip-shabby neighborhoods of New York and Los Angeles. #3 The first child in a family tends to be the parent-pleaser, while the second child tends to be the rebel. It demonstrates that both the irreligious and the religious are spiritually lost. #2 The parable of the two brothers demonstrates the destructive self-centeredness of the younger brother, but it also condemns the elder brother’s moralistic life in the strongest terms. #1 The parable of the two brothers is about two groups of people: the younger brother, who leaves home to follow Jesus, and the elder brother, who stays home and follows the traditional morality of his family and community. ![]() The prodigal God: recovering the heart of the Christian faith / by Timothy.
